Why Our Chefs Swear by Organic Cotton Aprons (and You Might Too)

I wear aprons -and listen carefully to people who do.

When I set out to design Apron Jo, I wasn’t thinking about trends. I was thinking about the chefs who spend long hours on their feet in hot kitchens, the ones who told me they were tired of wearing heavy, uncomfortable aprons that made their shifts harder than they needed to be.

So I took their feedback, added some good design thinking, and created an apron they now tell me they don’t want to take off.

Here’s why they love it, and why organic cotton might be the smartest fabric choice for you, too.

1. Organic cotton — what’s the big deal?

It’s grown without chemicals or pesticides, uses far less water than conventional cotton, and doesn’t pollute the environment. That’s already a win.

But it turns out it’s also a dream to wear. It’s soft, breathable, and naturally temperature regulating — perfect for high-heat, high-pressure kitchens.

2. What chefs have told me (and why we don’t use polyester)

I’ve heard the same thing from chefs over and over:

“Polyester aprons make me sweat like crazy.”
“They feel like wearing plastic.”
“They trap the heat.”

And they’re right. Polyester is essentially plastic. Every wash releases microplastics, and it doesn’t breathe well at all.

That’s why Apron Jo is made with organic cotton — to keep things cooler, more comfortable, and more sustainable.

3. Here’s a quick comparison:

Polyester Apron Apron Jo (Organic Cotton)
Breathability Low High
Heat retention High Low
Microplastics Yes, every wash None
Skin comfort Synthetic feel Naturally soft

4. Why it works in Aussie kitchens

Australian kitchens can be brutal in summer. And when you're flat out during service, your apron shouldn’t add to the stress.

Chefs tell me Apron Jo keeps them cooler and more focused. It’s lightweight, breathable, and designed with features that make sense for real work — like a phone pocket, a loop for a tea towel, and adjustable straps that don’t dig in.

And yes — naturally, it’s better for the planet, too

We use GOTS-certified organic cotton, sew right here in Sydney, ship plastic-free, and offer free lifelong stitching repairs — so your apron lasts longer and stays out of landfill.

That’s part of our promise to do things differently.

I may not wear aprons all day long, but I trust the chefs who do.
And they’ve made it clear: this one’s a keeper.
