Here’s How to Measure Yourself Using Just String and a Ruler

No Tape Measure? No Problem.

You don’t need special tools to get your size right.

Let’s face it: most people don’t own a proper tape measure. But when it comes to ordering chef jackets or aprons that actually fit, guessing your size can backfire.

Luckily, there’s a smarter way — and all it takes is a piece of string.

Step 1: Grab what you’ve got

You’ll need:

  1. A piece of string (any type)
  2. A ruler (or measuring stick)
  3. A pen and paper

Step 2: Wrap the string around your body

Start with your chest. Wrap the string comfortably around the widest part of your chest and mark or knot where it meets. Don't pull tight, just right.

Step 3: Lay it flat and measure

Measure string against a ruler. Line up the start, then read the length to your marked spot.
Write it down. That’s your number

Step 4: Use what you already own (bonus tip)

If you have a well-fitting jacket or shirt, lay it flat and measure it with the same method. Compare it to the measurements on our online size charts for each product to select the best matching size.

Why it matters

Sizing isn’t just about “small” or “large.”
It’s about airflow. Comfort. The way a jacket moves with you on the line. If you’re buying something beautiful, it should feel right too.

"Cream Collection jackets are the most comfortable I’ve ever worn — and I got the size spot on using this method."
– Francesco Mannelli, Executive Chef, Four Seasons Sydney
